Cambs Squash

A trip down to the south coast made a pleasant change from our numerous trips we’ve made travelling north up the A1. Having come second in the first half, we were in the promotion group with the potential to for promotion. Apart from our Suffolk neighbours, we hadn’t recently played the other two counties so we couldn’t really predict where we would finish. The group consisted:

Hampshire
Avon
Suffolk
Cambridgeshire

This weekend saw the first Cambs Junior Open, played at Abbotsley Squash Club.
The Tournament was organised by TONYSQUASH in conjunction with Cambs SRA, sponsored with prizes by HARROW SQUASH and also supported by a number of Local Sponsors.

The weekend was fairly buzzing, with a mixture of age groups competing. Boys U17, U15 and U11 and Girls U15 and U13 - with only 3 viewable courts the ages had to be restricted. The format generally was Monrad, except for the U15 Girls who played a Round Robin.

There will be a structured coaching session at Comberton Squash Club on Sunday 22 April from 10.30 – 12.45 at which all Under 11 players from around the county will be welcome. Drinks and snacks will be provided for the players and there will be a £5 charge per player, to be collected on the day to cover the cost of expenses (food, coaches and courts).

Our talented girls under 15 team had a very good year in their inter county championship matches. The team, from number one to five, consisted of Tayla Mounter, Nadine El Refee, Emily Fuller, Emma Barnard and Charlotte Bamford.
Their first round matches were held in Grantham where the girls played Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
Leicestershire and Norfolk fielded the strongest teams but the girls played very well to win both matches 3-2. The girls beat the host team 4-1, Tayla just losing 11-8 in the fifth game to the number one, Millie Soulby

Last weekend saw the Cambs Junior end of season tournament played at Cambridge Squash Club at Histon Road. It was so nice to see such a thriving atmosphere at the club all weekend, with excited juniors and anxious parents! The play as ever was great over the weekend, with superb squash being played throughout, culminating in the Boys U19 final on Sunday with a dazzling display of agility, fitness and ball play.

Bob Maison and Simon Scott are going to run an Easter Camp for Juniors over the Easter holidays at Cambridge Squash Club. Please check the attached poster for more details

Dougal treble takes Cambridge close to promotion
The Cambridgeshire Ladies Squash team seemed like obvious wooden-spoon contenders going into the promotion weekend at the Histon Road Club. However the tremendous team spirit forged during the last 2 seasons was to the fore again.

Report: Inter Counties Stage II Premier PROMOTION.
Location: Chesham Squash and Tennis Club, Buckinghamshire.
Date: 10th/11th March 2012.
Match 1: Cambridgeshire v Bucks.

The Cambs over 50 team travelled to Beaconsfield Squash Club, for stage 2 of the over 50, Inter County Competition. The opponents on this occasion were Bucks, the hosts, Worcestershire and Kent. With regular number one Andy Whitham unavailable the team comprised Seth Broadbent, Dave Bloxham, Paul Swallow, Gordon Lamb and Captain Tony Gay.

The first match against Worcestershire started at 11:00 am on Saturday. This was a closely contested match with Worcestershire winning 3-2.
