First Half Review and County Closed Call Up

First Half Review and County Closed Call Up

Well the first half seems to have flown by and we are now heading into cup matches; Christmas and then the County Closed –more of which later.
So a few passing thoughts regarding performances and predictions for 2010

Div 1 – With so many players to call upon and with Galen playing again Hunts County look nailed on for the title. With Pete Dickinson and James Berry unbeaten and James Powley looking comfortable at 2 it’s hard to see anyone getting past them on a regular basis.

Senior County Matches

Senior County Weekend 14-15November

Our senior teams play their first County weekends of the season and will be wearing new strip – sponsored by local company Martech Engineering.

Martech sponsor a number of sporting teams including Sawtry Colts football teams and are best known to the Squash community since the company is owned and run by Roel Van Es.

With Sammy Chambers still injured (get well soon mate) the Men’s squad is
Harry Leitch, Steffan Morgan, Neil Rossin, Dan McGinn, Nick Brown, James Powley, Matt Fielding and Rob Dadds.

GROUP COACHING SESSIONS

ES Level 3 Regional Academy Coaches Rebecca Moore and Bob Maison are planning to hold a number of group coaching sessions throughout the Summer.
These sessions are aimed specifically at Senior club level players looking to improve on basic techniques, tactical awareness , movement and fitness and will be an ideal way to spice up your Squash and to help provide an improved competitive season for your Cambs league matches or internal box leagues.

FINALS AND PRESENTATIONS

Cambridgeshire Squash Cup Finals were held this weekend at Hunts County Squash Club with some highly competitive matches to entertain spectators.

The Hereward Cup for Division 3 and 4 players was between Portugal Place and Abbotsley Squash Club. It was always going to be a tough match with Abbotsley, Div 3 winners for the season, going for the double.

CUP FINALS AND LEAGUE PRESENTATIONS

THE RUN –IN

So we are at the sharp end of the season again with the last few matches and then cup semis and finals.
So how’s it shaping? Well for those of you who check out “results zone" you can figure it for yourselves- but for a totally biased and completely predjudised view then here goes-
Div 1 looks like going Peterboro’s way with Hunts County taking 2nd place- they are also scheduled to meet in the Cup Final and that should be a cracker.

LADIES COUNTY TEAM - 2ND WEEKEND

Ladies Senior Inter-County 7th + 8th March at St Albans.

Team: 1 Carrie Hastings, 2 Julia Dolman, 3 Mhairi Dougal, 4, Elsje Van Es, 5, Carol Hargreaves, 6, Nicky Hastings

We were fortunate enough to only have to travel to St Albans as there other two teams were Devon and Somerset.

We had hoped to have a team of 7 players to give more players the opportunity to play and to give the chance for Elsje Van Es (aged 16) some senior match experience.

Unfortunately Anne Babtie, Kate Gray and Faye Kowalewsky couldn’t make it and we ended up with a weakened, but keen, side.

County U19 Finals- Come on Cambs!!!

This weekend at the National Squash centre our u19 Squad of Sammy Chambers; Daniel McGinn; Robert Dadds; Peter Dickinson and Declan Osborn
play for a 2nd time in the National Finals.

Those of you who follow these columns will know that these boys have won u15 and u17 titles and that effectively next year is "their year" - this year is another warm-up but hey guys if you win it early that would be ok!!

Irrespective of the results these lads have done the county proud and for a fuller preview please review the Youth Scene report in last Saturday's Cambridge Evening News.
