Cambs vs Buckinghamshire
First on was Sam Mueller at 5 (new to county team and playing her debutant game). She got off to a nervous start but she was too strong for her opponent winning quite easily in 3.
Also on at the same time was Katie Bradshaw (nee Gray) at 3. She won her first games very easily and then got caught out by a lob drop game played well by her opponent. She stepped up the pace again in the 4th winning the match 3-1.
Next on was Jo Scrivens at 4, against the twin sister of the one Sam played. Jo played extremely well to finish this match in 3 but definitely proved herself to be the stronger player.
Carrie Hastings at no.1 on next against a girl who looked very useful in the knock up.
However, Carrie was too strong and fast and won very easily in 3.
Kira Petersen at no.2 was on last. The first game was quite close but Kira settled down and played well and again won in 3-0
Therefore beat Bucks 5-0 (20pts to 1)
Cambs vs Oxfordshire
Sam again on first, playing a similar game to opponent, unfortunately both getting in each other’s way. A difficult game to mark, with lots of glares from the players. She won the first two games and lost the 3rd 10-8. She then regained control and won in 4.
Next on was Kate an early against a young Oxon junior player. She dominated the first 2 games winning them both easily. She then got trapped playing her opponents game and struggled to regain control, going down 2-3.
Jo on next against an ex Cambs University player. Again in control for the first 2 games, but losing out on fitness in the next 3, going down 2-3.
Fortunately Carrie was still focused beating an ex Birmingham University team player 3-0. The first two games were quite close and Carrie was 8-0 up in the third, when she relaxed too early and allowed Rachel to jump from 0-6,. Carrie finally closed the match out 9-6 in the 3rd.
This left the match at 2-2.
Kira was again on last, having won the 1st game, she lost control in the 2nd and lost that game. After a team talk from the captain, Kira lengthened her shots and won the next 2 very easily.
Therefore beat Oxon 3-2 (18pts to 7)
Cambs vs Northants
Sam got the matches off to a storming start, winning convincingly 9-0. Her opponent took control in the 2nd taking it 9-4. The final games were a real battle but sam came out on top. Great performance from the new girl!
Kate also got off to a great start but couldn’t maintain the pace throughout, losing 3-1 to her opponent who just didn’t stop running.
Jo was up against yet another runner, which isn’t what a student needs on a Sunday morning. She was slow to start but woke up and took control in the 2nd, unfortunately losing 10-8. The 3rd game was quite one sided so Cambridge went 2-1 down!
Carrie managed to play a tight, consistent game of squash that offered very few opportunities for her opponent to play her accurate attacking short game. Luckily her opponent started to get impatient and tinned quite a lot.
Games were 2-2 and it was all down to Kira again. She was slow to start in the first but once she got into her rhythm she played confident aggressive squash to take the match 3-0.
