Cambridgeshire Boys U19 having cruised their way to the finals of the U19 event were on a high as they started the weekend in Manchester. The top four teams in the country to play off for the title were Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Surrey and Gloucestershire.
Cambs were faced with Surrey for their first match and were quietly confident as Surrey hadn’t managed to field their strongest side.
No 3 string, Robert Dadds, was the opening game and didn’t put a foot wrong the whole match winning tidily 3-0. Declan Osborn (5th string) had an up and down performance losing 3-1. Peter Dickinson (No 4 string) once again put in a very clinical performance for the side and won comfortably 3-0. Next was No 1 string, Sammy Chambers, playing a younger player from Surrey and on paper should have won but Sammy was unable to find form and lost 3-1. The match at 2-2 put huge pressure on No 2 string, Daniel McGinn to win the match. Daniel tried hard but couldn’t find his best game to defeat the Surrey No 2. Daniel lost 3-0. Cambridgeshire lost 3-2 to Surrey.
Despite the huge disappointment the boys felt they managed to lift themselves for the ¾ play offs the next day. Everybody put in first class performances and the team beat Yorkshire comfortably 4-1.
The final team positions were:
Champions
Gloucestershire
2nd place
Surrey
3rd place
Cambridgeshire
4th place
Yorkshire
The boys did brilliantly to make the final and to finish 3rd place. The team is still young for the age group so will have an opportunity to compete for the title next year.
