England Squash hosted the U17 Inter County Finals in Solihull this weekend for the top 4 teams in the country, Gloucestershire, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and Essex.

Cambridgeshire’s experienced squad of 5 won the U15’s in 2006 and were keen to add the U17’s title to their achievements.

The boys met Gloucestershire first with No 3 string, Robert Dadds (Comberton), starting play. Dadds was very disciplined and dominated the play with a 3-0 win. No 1 string, Sammy Chambers (Crown), had a tighter match winning 3-1 as did No 2 string, Daniel McGinn (Peterborough). No 4 string, Peter Dickinson (Hunts County), had a very comfortable 3-0 win. Declan Osborne at No 5 had a tough match losing 3-1. Cambridgeshire beat Gloucestershire 4-1.

This put Cambridgeshire in the top half of the competition to play Yorkshire for 1st and 2nd place. Osborne started the match off with a very spirited win. His hard driving and movement around the court were too much for his opponent allowing him to win the match 3-0.

Next on was Robert Dadds who played a steady game but his opponent dictated the pace and Dadds lost 0-3.

Chambers had a tough opening game against Yorkshire’s James Earles. Chambers dropped the first and struggled for form until midway through the 2nd. He came through and won the 2nd and then won the next two to win the match 3-1.

The match at 2-1 to Cambridge needed No 4 string Peter Dickinson or No 2 string Daniel McGinn to win a tie. Dickinson started very well winning the first 9-1 but eased up in the 2nd which he lost. The match was very tense but Dickinson rose to the occasion winning the 3rd and 4th comfortably.

Cambridgeshire had won enough ties for the title which left McGinn the difficult task of playing a dead rubber. He fought well until the end but finished losing 3-1.

Cambridgeshire won the England Squash Inter County U17’s 3-2.
