This year’s tournament, held at Cambridge Squash Club over the weekend of 28/29 March, attracted over seventy entries - a significant increase on the last few years. Saturday’s events (in the Under 13 and Under 17 age groups) culminated in a U17 final of outstanding quality, with Toby Reeves (St Ivo) just managing to outlast Ben Northfield (Leys School) in a thrilling contest. Jeremy Harris (Comberton) edged out Gregory Goodwin (Hunts County) in a well-fought U13 final. In the Girls’ Saturday events Nayera El-Refee (St Ivo/Hunts County) proved too strong for Jasmine Luckett (Crown Lodge) in the U17 final, while Nayera’s sister Nadine (St Ivo) beat rising star Tayla Mounter (Hunts County) in the U13 final.
Sunday’s schedule saw Scott Drewery (Crown Lodge) overcome Emily Fuller (Hunts County) in the Mixed U11 final. Tayla Mounter came off second best in the Girls U15 to Comberton’s Selina Leung, who fought back from a game down to win a very close match. The Boys’ U15 final almost witnessed a major upset, as strongly-fancied Tiaki Loza (St Ivo) went two games down against Sam Bradshaw (Comberton), but Tiaki found hidden reserves to come back to a 3-2 victory. The Boys’ U19 event had only three competitors, but Euan Macnamee (Comberton) impressed with a fine display of racket skills to take the title.
The tournament also saw the award of trophies to the winners of this season’s County Junior Leagues: Premier Division – Leys School ; Division I – St Ivo ; Division II – St Ivo ; Division III – Hunts County ; Division IV – St Ivo. The Brian Fielding shields for Most Improved Junior went to David Macdonald (Hunts County) in the U17 category and his clubmate Tayla Mounter in the U13 category.
