Brian Fielding Tournament 2009 Results

This year’s tournament in memory of Cambridgeshire’s much-missed junior coach Brian Fielding was held at Fenland Squash Club on Saturday 12 December. There was a very good turn-out, especially for the morning section, Group A, which necessitated the re-shuffling of some competitors into the more demanding Group B!

Harris Girls U13 Inter County Championships Stage 1

The first ever Cambridgeshire Girls U13 County Team gave a great performance in their Stage 1 matches in Leicestershire.

The county was represented by Tayla Mounter, Nadine el Refee, Emily Fuller and Emma Barnard.

They beat Leicestershire 2-1, with only Tayla more than meeting her match in England’s number 3 player, Mari Taylor.

This was followed by a great win over Worcestershire, 3-0, with only one game being dropped.

We just lost to Warwickshire, who were overall winners on the day, 6 games to 5, with the one game making the difference between first and second place.

GU19s visit Surrey for National Inter-County Harris Cup

This weekend the GU19s County team, Elsje van Es, Nayera el-Refee, Hayley Green, Kate Hendry and Emily Philpott visited New Malden Squash Club for the first fixture in this season’s Harris Cup Championship.

The girls, who have never played together as a team before, were very pleased with their 3rd place. Surrey (1st) and Kent (2nd) played strong teams and the Cambs girls were only able to snatch a few games in the first two rounds with Nayera performing particularly well against Surrey’s Francesca Ritchie who is ranked #20 in England.

Cambridgeshire Junior County Closed Squash Tournament 2009

Hunts County Squash Club in Hemingford Grey was once again the venue for the tournament, held over the weekend of 26/27 September. The overall turn-out was high, and it was particularly encouraging to see some promising young competitors from Abbotsley club this year.

Cambs Under 15 Grand Prix

The Grand Prix was held at Comberton SC on Saturday 12 September, and although it did not attract as many players from other clubs as we might have wished (seven of the twelve competitors were from the home club), the afternoon provided some very entertaining squash.

The first three rounds left two “old foes”, Jeremy Harris of Comberton and Gregory Goodwin of Hunts County, battling it out for first place, with Jeremy coming off best on this occasion over two tightly-contested games.

Cambridgeshire Junior Squash League Tournament

This year’s tournament, held at Cambridge Squash Club over the weekend of 28/29 March, attracted over seventy entries - a significant increase on the last few years. Saturday’s events (in the Under 13 and Under 17 age groups) culminated in a U17 final of outstanding quality, with Toby Reeves (St Ivo) just managing to outlast Ben Northfield (Leys School) in a thrilling contest. Jeremy Harris (Comberton) edged out Gregory Goodwin (Hunts County) in a well-fought U13 final.

FINALS OF INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2008/09

Cambridgeshire Boys U19 having cruised their way to the finals of the U19 event were on a high as they started the weekend in Manchester. The top four teams in the country to play off for the title were Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire, Surrey and Gloucestershire.

Cambs were faced with Surrey for their first match and were quietly confident as Surrey hadn’t managed to field their strongest side.

County U-15 boys step up to second stage matches.

Is there really a Cambridgeshire under-15 inter-county team?
Well the U-15 team may not be as well-known as are the Cambridgeshire elite but they are not Cambridgeshire lite: they have trained hard together and will fight for every point no matter how strong the opposition.

Last November in the first stage matches against Suffolk, Norfolk, and Leicestershire we ended up beating Suffolk on points and finishing second overall. This was down to only a handful of extra games won, despite narrowly losing our actual match against Suffolk.

With Cambridgeshire Junior Squash fully focussed on developing squads to emulate the National Winning u15 and u17 team Comberton Squash Club hosted a day- long Coaches Workshop and Junior practice Sessions.

A wide range of coaching experience was on hand from Level 3 Regional Coaches through to Young Coaches just embarking on a coaching career mid-way through Part 1.

National u19 County Championships - 2nd Stage

BOYS U19 –2ND STAGE

Whilst there maybe a more comprehensive report at a later date there maybe a few “anoraks” out there like myself who can’t rest without wondering how the lads got on.

With the success this squad of boys have had over the last 4-5 years it is easy to get a bit blaze about the possibility of making it through to a National Finals. However, given they made it last year as pretty much an u17 team then our expectations are always high.

With the lads playing well in the recent County event, hopes were high in advance of the clashes with Worcester and Warks.

COACHES WORKSHOP

There will be a Coaches workshop and Junior Coaching Programme lead by England Squash Academy Director David Duncalf at Comberton Squash Club on Sunday 1st February.

The theme will be - Developing Junior Players from Club level through to National Squad.

This workshop and discussion group will be an ideal opportunity to review ideas and discuss the issues we all face when trying to develop Junior Players

The Coach Workshop will be from 10-12.00 and Junior players from 12-4.00pm

Results from the 4th Brian Fielding Memorial Tournament

The 2008 tournament was held at Fenland Squash Club (Brian’s club, St Ivo, was undergoing renovations) on 13 December. As last year the competitors were divided into two groups: Group A for the younger players and Group B for the older ones. There was provision for 16 players in each group to compete through a series of four rounds until a ranking order was achieved (though an epidemic of flu and sickness robbed us of some competitors at the last minute!).

Cambridgeshire Boys U19

Cambridgeshire hosted the 1st stage of England Squash Boys U19 Inter County event.

The same Cambridgeshire squad won the U17’s national title last year and are keen to do well this year in the U19’s.

Cambridgeshire faced Norfolk first with good results from all of the squad. Steven Mason played a good match after a hesitant start losing the first game came back to win the second 11-7. Unable to hold his opponent he lost the next 2 games. The rest of the squad, Daniel McGinn, Robert Dadds, Peter Dickinson and Declan Osborne, all won 3-0. Cambridgeshire beat Norfolk 4-1

STARS; PARS and the Great Raffle Scandal

Although our league season hasn’t started yet Junior squash in the County and Area is off and running.

The Junior County Championships were held at Hunts County over 27/28 September with a great turnout and great organisation – the usual suspects Becs; Glyn and Ray Scrivens did their expected fantastic job and also big respect to Colin and Ahmed from HC whilst James was on maternity leave!!!

Must also mention “Van Es” company for stepping in as last minute sponsor.

Cambridgeshire Junior County Closed Squash Tournament 2008

The tournament was held over the weekend of 27/28 September at Hunts County Squash Club, and provided a feast of competitive high-quality squash.

Daniel McGinn (Peterborough Town) produced some excellent squash in the Under 17 final on the Saturday, eventually overcoming Robert Dadds (Comberton) in a gruelling contest, and then put on an impressive performance in the Under 19 final on Sunday before succumbing to England international Sammy Chambers (Crown Lodge). Elsje van Es (Hunts County) was a comfortable winner of both the Girls Under 17 and Under 19 events.

County U15 Grand Prix

The event was open to any boys or girls around the county who are not currently members of the County squad and aimed to give them the opportunity to compete in an informal and enjoyable atmosphere.

Chambers leads England to European glory

Crown’s Sammy Chambers capped an outstanding season by leading the England U17team to glory when clinching the European team title.

In a season where he has already become the county’s youngest ever Senior champion and has lead the County boys u17 squad to the National title this has to be a moment to savour.

England Squash hosted the U17 Inter County Finals in Solihull this weekend for the top 4 teams in the country, Gloucestershire, Cambridgeshire, Yorkshire and Essex.

Cambridgeshire’s experienced squad of 5 won the U15’s in 2006 and were keen to add the U17’s title to their achievements.

England Squash held the finals of the U19 Inter County Competition over the weekend of 15-16 March at the National Squash Centre -Manchester. Cambridgeshire had earned their way to the final with a very young squad who have two further years within this age group. A fantastic achievement for Cambridgeshire to be one of the top four teams in the country, especially at such a young age

Suffolk Juniors – Well done Peter!!

The 2nd Weekend of Junior Competition saw Peter Dickinson roar through the field to capture the u19 title.

Unseeded due to lack of recent tournament play Peter was in sparkling form sweeping aside last weeks u17 Winner Robert Dadds and then going on to beat Bucks No1 Charlie Wyatt , who’d come from 2-0 to get past Ahmed El Refee, in the final.

Twelve juniors from five Cambridgeshire clubs attended a Young Leaders Course at Comberton Village College Squash Club on Sunday 27 January 2008.

The course was open to any junior aged 14 or over, and aimed to teach basic leadership and communication skills, to qualify the juniors to assist at coaching sessions and to provide them with ideas for coaching younger players, with a strong emphasis on Mini-squash.

Cambridgeshire U19 Boys had an unexpected result in Stage I of England Squash Inter County Championship. Nottingham played Leicestershire in the morning winning 5-0 without dropping a game so we knew we had tough opposition before us.

Cambridgeshire played Leicestershire first and No 5 string Nils Downs and No 2 string Daniel McGinn both won 3-1. Ahmed El Refee, Robert Dadds and Sammy Chambers all won 3-0. Cambs beat Leicestershire 5-0

First round match reports are as follows:

Comberton’s Junior League season got off to a flying start at Fenland SC on Sunday October 14, with the Club’s Second Team emerging emphatic winners from both their matches.

St Ivo could only produce two players, so Will Harris at 3 had a walkover, while Pete Tasker at 2 and Ollie Thorne at 1 had comfortable 3-0 wins.

Training partners triumph in Cambridgeshire junior championships

Training partners Sammy Chambers (Crown) and Robert Dadds (Comberton) took the honours at this weekends Cambridgeshire Junior Championships, Sponsored by Tucker-Gardner and Dunlop.

National No.1 at U17, Chambers was hot favourite to retain his U19 title but was made to work hard for it, first by Dadds in the Semi-Final and then by Daniel McGinn (Peterboro) in the final. However, Chambers proved too strong for both an added yet another title to his already record haul.

Double for Dadds and El Refee

Robert Dadds and Nayera El Refee doubled up at this week Mid East Area Championships adding to their u17 County Titles won at last weeks Cambridgeshire Championships.

With Academy Director Mike Harris away on International duty Academy Coaches James Powley and Bob Maison were fortunate to be joined by Area Organiser Andy Hastings and National Performance Director Peter Hirst to run the rule over the Area’s Junior talent.
