The third Brian Fielding Memorial Tournament – and the first to be run as a Grand Prix – was held at St Ivo Outdoor Centre on Sunday 9 December. Competitors were divided into Groups A (younger and less experienced players) and B.
The Group A matches produced a surprisingly high quality both of individual skill and of competitive matches. After nearly three hours of battling squash spread over four rounds the winner of the Brian Fielding Group A Trophy was Sam Bradshaw of Comberton. Sam only began playing squash three months ago, yet he progressed through the event without dropping a game. Nevertheless the final against Gregory Goodwin (Hunts County) was well contested, and Gregory was a worthy runner-up. The ¾ play-off saw Max Fuller (Hunts County) prove too experienced for relative newcomer Alban Fernandez (Comberton).
Group B was a happy hunting ground for the Macdonald brothers of Hunts County, with older brother Paul defeating Sean Gant (Hunts Leisure) in the final, while younger brother David exceeded his seeding to make it through to the 3/4 play-off before injury forced him to retire, leaving Tom Symmons (Comberton) in third place. As in Group A, the Group B competition produced some excellent five-game cliff-hangers to warm spectators and players alike on a chilly day!
We were delighted to welcome Brian’s widow Jenny, who presented the Group B trophy, and thanks are due to the St Ivo Centre, who once again made their courts available at a greatly-discounted price, and particularly to Rebeccca Moore, who devised, organized and ran the tournament with her customary efficiency and energy.
